Auto-Categorization
Lejr suggests a category from your vendor settings, learned rules, a vendor map, your bank's category and, as a last step, AI. Suggestions never post on their own.
Lejr suggests a category for each incoming transaction by checking a series of sources, most reliable first. Fixed rules go first. An AI model is asked only when none of them can place the line.
Every source produces a suggestion. None of them can post to your ledger.

Sources, most reliable first
- Your vendor settings
The default category of the vendor a transaction is linked to, and any merchant rule you set for this business.
- Your past choices
Rules learned from how you've categorized a merchant before. Your most recent choice wins.
- Known merchants
A maintained map of common merchant names to categories, so a new account codes familiar vendors from day one.
- Close matches
Near-matches of messy bank descriptions against your learned rules. The threshold is high, so this catches typos and variants, not loose guesses.
- Your bank's category
The category the bank feed supplies, mapped to your chart of accounts. Less specific than the sources above.
- Your account names
Words in the description matched against your account names. Used only when nothing above placed the line.
- AI, last
Lejr asks a model only when the sources above found nothing, or only an account-name match. If the model fails, the earlier result stands.
Why the order matters
Your explicit rules beat learned history, learned history beats the shared map, and the model never overrides any of them. Once you teach Lejr something, it keeps doing it.
Good to know
- No setting lets the engine post on its own.
Common questions
- Can I turn the AI step off?
- There's no separate switch. The model is consulted only for lines the other sources can't place, and its answer is a suggestion like any other.
